You can absolutely forget the Percy Jackson movies, now, if you so desire. Percy Jackson and the Olympians—a series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s books that was announced in 2020—officially has the green light at Disney+.
A clearly enthusiastic Riordan announced the news via Disney+’s YouTube channel, saying, “The wait is over, demigods. I am thrilled to be the first to tell you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really, truly, and for sure coming to your screens.”
Riordan went on to say that James Bobin is on board as the show’s pilot director; he recently directed the pilot for The Mysterious Benedict Society. “James knows the Percy Jackson books well,” Riordan said. The author is an executive producer on the show, and co-wrote the pilot with Jon Steinberg.

Steinberg and his producing partner Dan Shotz are overseeing the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is extremely interesting and maybe somewhat baffling, as Steinberg created the under-appreciated, brilliant, and very much for-adult-audiences Black Sails. (He also created Jericho and developed Human Target.) Monica Owusu-Breen, whose producing resume includes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Lost, and Fringe, is also among Percy‘s producers.
The Percy Jackson books follow the adventures of their titular hero, who learns he is a demigod and the son of Poseidon. Over the course of five main books, he meets other demigods, has countless adventures with Olympians and creatures from mythology, and faces an evil that could destroy the world. (As one does, where gods are concerned.)
